Winterhaven Beach
September 28, 2016
It will soon be Wednesday September 28th and we’ll continue our beach roving at Winterhaven Beach near Ponce Inlet. Trip Request form is now open. The form is at the bottom of this page.
Please notice the addresses of the drop off points for payments for this trip, and drop your check, CLEARLY marked with your name and the date of the trip, in the basket or box provided at the address. There is no need to ring the bell or hand your envelope to someone in person. We do this so members accepting checks do NOT have to be there to accept them.
This trip will offer the opportunity to visit the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse grounds; what is referred to as a living museum by some as the grounds contain the original light house, oil house, lens house, and the very interesting lighthouse keeper’s family’s home. The optional visit requires a $6.95 entrance fee which members would pay at the entrance. The fee includes an in-depth, detailed, and historically interesting tour, but you are not obligated to stay with the tour group if you would rather just browse the grounds on your own. Recently, they have added an exhibit of the very first, homemade rafts used by the first Cubans to arrive on Florida shores in the 1950’s as they attempted to escape Communist rule.
Those on the trip do not have to reserve this optional visit in advance, you only need decide the morning of the trip departure, make sure you put your beach gear in the under coach luggage bay designated for those going on the side trip, and of course bring some extra cash for entrance in case the policy on which credit cards are accepted changes. The grounds does have a good sized gift shop which sells a variety of nautical themed articles, books, cards, etc. and at last visit did accept Visa and MC.
The coach will make a stop at the beach first for those spending the entire day there. Those going to the lighthouse grounds will stay on the bus and proceed to the tour. Approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours are needed to tour all structures and be transported back to the beach area (less than 2.0 miles). Those going on the optional tour would be transported back for beach time around noon.
Packing a lunch and/or snacks is recommended, but we will advise members in the departure email if we find out beach concessions will be available on a weekday in September.
Following the beach day, plans include a stop at a VERY informal and well known Ponce Inlet indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar overlooking the water, again, less than a 2 mile ride from the beach. This spot offers a range of prices to fit any budget and variety of dishes for most any tastes; from full sea food dinners to burgers & fries, wraps, excellent fish tacos, salads, and many other choices.
